An Australian-developed, world-first approach

Care · Collaborate · Connect is fundamentally different from traditional risk-based approaches. Our framework puts the consumer at the centre and builds on their innate strengths.

  • Consumer-centred — care designed around the person, not the system
  • Needs-based — responding to what people actually need, not just risk profiles
  • Strengths-focused — we recognise that asking for help is a strength and a sign of hopefulness
  • Evidence-based — grounded in peer-reviewed research with demonstrated outcomes

Why Health Professionals Changed to Care · Collaborate · Connect

The Problem: Traditional Risk Triage Failed Help-Seekers

Traditional suicide prevention relied on predicting risk—categorising people into arbitrary tiers (low, medium, or high risk). Meta-analyses have proven that suicide risk assessments cannot accurately predict suicide, meaning probability-based models inherently accepted that some people were miscategorised, harmed, or died by suicide.

Risk categorisation directly dictated the care provided. Instead of receiving immediate, practical support, help-seekers faced tick-box checklists, long waits, and forced interventions aimed at managing clinician and service liability.

Consumers explicitly stated that this approach caused harm. Being treated as a “risk to manage” made them feel judged, dismissed, and mistrusted—destroying hope and causing many to mistrust healthcare providers and avoid asking for help in future crises.

Accepting that some lives fell through the cracks of an inaccurate risk formula was unacceptable.

The Solution: A World-First, Needs-Based Pioneer

Developed in 2016 to address this critical unmet need, Care · Collaborate · Connect was the world’s first needs-based, strengths-focused paradigm designed to replace outdated risk assessments.

Grounded in the Health Theory of Coping, the model reframes asking for help as an invitation to support, not a liability to manage.

Every life matters. A needs-based framework discards risk probabilities to ensure every individual’s unique needs for support are met in the moment.

Proven Evaluation Results

Evaluation of the Care · Collaborate · Connect training demonstrated significant, measurable impact:

  • Improved Skills & Confidence: Participants showed significant improvements in suicide prevention knowledge, positive attitudes, clinical confidence, and self-care.
  • Effective Across All Experience Levels: The training was equally transformative for both early-career professionals and experienced clinicians.
  • Aligned with Service Priorities: Qualitative feedback showed near-universal endorsement, with organisations confirming the framework seamlessly aligned with their core values and service delivery goals.

Most importantly, consumers report positive healthcare experiences including feeling understood, supported, and able to cope.
